Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan was in Omaha Sunday to serve as MC of and judge for a high-heel dash in support of child literacy.
Sponsored by the Junior League of Omaha, the race featured women, men and teams – many of them in costumes – running along the main street near the Village Pointe Shopping Center.
Entrants were required to wear heels at least two inches in length for the run.
“Since the League's inception (in 1919), our members have donated over $1.9 million dollars and more than 1.4 million volunteer hours to our community,” the organization states on its website. “League members research areas of need in the Omaha area and educate the membership and the community about those issues.”
Among the projects the group says it helped found are:
- Douglas County Immunization Task Force
- Emmy Gifford Children's Theater (now The Rose Theater)
- Every Woman Matters
- Fontenelle Forest Guild
- Friends of the Omaha Public Library
- General Crook House
- Girls Incorporated of Omaha
- Joslyn Museum Guild
- Nebraska Food Bank Network
- Nebraska Special Olympics
- Omaha Community Foundation
- Omaha Symphony Guild
- Race for the Cure (now the Nebraska Race for the Cure)
- Parent Assistance Hotline
- Women's Shelter Hope
