miss America contestant pursuing double mastectomy

Allyn Rose, the 24 year old Miss DC, plans to have a double mastectomy after she flauts her roller skating talent and struts in a bikini. She is having both breast removed as a preventative measure to decrease her chances of developing the disease that killed her mother, grandmother and great aunt.
If crowned, the University of Maryland, College Park politics major could become the first Miss America not endowed with the Barbie silhouette associated with beauty queens. Rose stated that her father first suggested the subject during her freshman year of college, two years after the death of her mother.
She first told her dad that she wasn’t going to pursue a double mastectomy, until her father said that she was going to end up like her mother. She has pondered that conversation for the past three years while working as a model and winning several pageants, including Miss Maryland USA, Miss Synergy and the Miss District of Columbia competition, which put her in the running for Saturday’s bonanza.
Rose is usually reserved, she acknowledged that she comes off as more or an ice-queen than a girl next door.
