Mallory Hytes Hagan from Brooklyn, N.Y. was crowned Miss America 2013, the Daily News reported on Jan. 12. The beauty contest was held at the Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas.
The 23-year-old from Park Slope is a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
Hagan will receive a $50,000 scholarship and will be given the opportunity to be a yearlong vocal advocate to special causes such as child sexual abuse awareness, a cause that is dear to her heart.
The newest crowned beauty won the hearts of judges when she responded with grace and confidence, to a question concerning her views to the NRA’s proposal in posting armed guards to every school to protect children.
The Daily News quoted Hagan’s answer, “I don’t think the proper way to fight violence is with violence,” Hagan said firmly. “I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways we can use them properly. We can lock them up, we can have gun safety classes, we can have a longer waiting period.”
For the talent competition, Miss Hagan performed a tap dance routine to James Brown’s “Get Up Off Of That Thing.”
The Alabama native will also uphold the persona of a role model for American communities under the Miss America title.
The second runner up winner was Miss South Carolina, Ali Rogers and third runner up went to Alicia Clifton from Oklahoma.
