The Misha May Foundation, an organization that helps difficult to place dogs in the Lakewood area, is having a special event on Saturday, November 12. Called Moment for Mutts, it is more than just a fundraiser for the organization. It is a chance to recognize some special mutts that are not only graduates of the organization, but examples to people everywhere that all dogs deserve a chance.
“These three confident, kind and wise males helped almost all of Misha May’s rescued dogs between 2005 and 2011. It’s a new era for Misha May without these three gentlemen,” says Lorraine May, Executive Director, Founder and Head Trainer of Misha May. “Buddy and Brinx were adopted together this summer by a former Board member who had taken Buddy to Misha May training classes when he first arrived. She had to wait until there was space in her home and couldn’t believe that Buddy was still available. Zeb passed away at the age of 11 on February 7, 2010."
Buddy – This one-year-old shepherd mix had passed through three homes and was slated for euthanasia in a shelter when he came to Misha May to work on his separation anxiety. This was a dog who cleared six-foot fences and lashed out at cats. At 100 pounds, he was perceived as intimidating, but he had a love for people and other dogs that Misha May could not give up on. May said he was a little nervous around small puppies at first, but as he learned and grew, his duty was to accompany the rescued litters of puppies when they had to go outside late at night.
Brinx – This yellow Lab mix arrived at Misha May at the same time they received 80 rescue animals from Hurricane Katrina. May said Brinx had his sweet disposition crushed from harsh training during his youth and he feared all humans by the age of one year. Soon after he arrived at Misha May, he became known as Uncle Brinx because he could read and understand other dogs so well. He gave them space when they needed it and other dogs understood him.
Zeb – He was a golden retriever that May found as a stray. She said she found him wondering the mountains fending for himself. May said at first she thought he was telling her he needed helped getting home, but his owners no longer wanted him. He soon had a home with May where his trust, respect and love for humans helped May give other rescued dogs another chance.

The Misha May Foundation believes that each individual dog, regardless of breed or mix, age or issue, or amount of time needed, deserves the opportunity to find a forever home. They rehabilitate medical and behavior problems, and facilitate healing. They are committed to the forever placement of each animal for whom they assume responsibility and are committed to a compassionate society where euthanasia, or a ‘good death‘, is reserved for those animals who are suffering without hope, as well as for those animals whose dangerous behavior is truly beyond rehabilitation. They offer dog training classes and dog trainer certification classes because their motto is, "Contact us first for training so you don't need us later for rescue."
