Some of Washington D.C. area residents are getting just a small taste of what it’s like to be without power and warmth during one of the region’s most disastrous blizzards since 1996. That small discomfort, however, is nothing compared to being homeless without food or shelter on a daily basis during inclement weather. With little help and no where to turn, one beacon continues to shine brightly and has kept their doors open to carry through it’s commitments to DC area’s homeless community.
Miriam’s Kitchen has made very special efforts to ensure that their doors remain opened during this week’s wildly inclement weather. In fact, Miriam’s Kitchen has not closed its doors in their 27 year history of providing service to DC’s homeless community.
How do they do it? Miriam’s Kitchen Chef, Steve Badt hosts sleepovers for the staff and volunteers. The sleepovers guarantee the doors will open at 6:30 am every morning. The volunteers and staff are so dedicated to serving their guests; they have been known to walk two miles in the snow just to be there by opening. Miriam’s Kitchen is a remarkable organization, serving the DC homeless community.
Miriam’s kitchen is asking D.C. residents for their assistance to make life a little bit easier for the city’s homeless:
1 – Donations of warm socks, gloves, hats and scarves are always welcome.
2 – Promptly clear sidewalks to make it easier for people to get to Miriam’s Kitchen.
3 – Donate warm sleeping bags, blankets and tarp supplies. Many of Miriam’s Kitchen guests sleep outdoors despite the weather.
4 – If you see someone outside in need, please call the Hypothermia Shelter Hotline at 1-800-535-7252.
Let’s help the remarkable volunteers and staff at Miriam’s Kitchen make the blizzard of 2010 a little bit easier for our homeless.
