Miriam Carey, the 34-year-old woman who was shot dead by DC Capitol police after she attempted to ram her vehicle past White House barriers, had a history of mental instability, including the delusional thought that President Obama had wired her home in Connecticut in order to broadcast her life on television, reports ABC News on Oct. 4.
Despite family and friends stating Carey had no such irrational behaviors, sources told ABC News that Carey’s boyfriend and her daughter's father, 54-year-old Eric Francis, called police multiple times in 2012 to report Carey was “delusional, acting irrationally and putting her infant daughter in danger.”
Miriam Carey’s mother, Idella Carey, confirmed that her daughter suffered from depression after the birth of her one-year-old daughter, who was with Carey and unharmed during her harrowing chase down Pennsylvania Avenue Thursday.
“She had post-partum depression after having the baby,” said Idella Carey, adding, “A few months later, she got sick. She was depressed... She was hospitalized.”
A neighbor of Miriam’s, Erin Jackson, was asked about Carey’s behavior, and if her actions on the White House grounds were at all consistent with what she knew of her neighbor and her struggles with mental illness.
“Absolutely,” was Jackson’s curt reply.
According to sources Carey believed she was the “prophet of Stamford” and was capable of communicating with Obama. –ABC News on Miriam Carey
The unarmed Carey, a dental hygienist, was shot and killed after careening around the Capitol grounds and crashing at Second Street NE. The FBI, along with Secret Service and local police searched Carey’s apartment in the Woodside Green complex Friday, removing multiple items and her home computer.
For precautionary measure, police sent a robot through a window before entering her apartment and after evacuating other residents.
Stamford Police Chief Jonathan Fontneau said thus far they have found “nothing out of the ordinary.”
