MusicGarage.org recently threw a party for the grand opening of their new location and another directly afterward, for the release of Minx’s new album, ‘13.’ The MusicGarage Kids played among other groups for the celebration. Unfortunately, a migraine can really deter a person from attending exactly when planned. Catching a bit of the last performance by Advent Horizon was awesome, as the progressive rock band played exciting songs with energetic spirit, to an appreciative crowd.
The Minx album release party was for invited adults only. Snacks and alcoholic beverages provided…and it was a pretty rockin’ party. The talented and versatile duo play with a variety of different sounds, which mesh incredibly well with the guitar playing of Raffi Shahinian and vocals of Ischa Bee. Their music is fun, funky and different, a combination that almost makes Minx a genre all their own. Their performance is never short of any of the above adjectives, either. They manage to make each one engaging and strange, in a thoroughly enjoyable way.
Particularly interesting about watching Minx, is the garb they don, especially considering that Bee displayed about 9 different looks. One of which included a colorful tutu with real, large, swirly lollipops. She pulled them out one by one to hand them to the audience, while singing to the song titled exactly that: ‘Lollipop.’ Another included wire wings and headwear. Shahinian’s guitar playing was so skillfully beautiful, it was hard not to become mesmerized by the quick and tactful finger work. It never ceases to amaze; how much talent can come from two people, which generally seems to take at least four people to achieve. To sound a bit like Bee, buy an album and go see them live because Minx is funsies!
