The UMass Minutewomen soccer team evened up their record on the season at 1-1 with a 4-0 victory over the University of Vermont (1-2-0) yesterday. For first year UMass coach Ed Matz it was also his 100th career victory as a coach of a women’s soccer team.

Junior Meghan Collins opened the scoring for the Minutewomen with a tally at the 22nd minute mark of the first half. Collins settled down a ball from about 10 yards outside the zone and then sent a low shot through a gathering of players that the UVM goalie Sarah Leiby appeared to expect a higher bounce on. The ball stayed low and went under the Leiby’s hands for Collins’ first collegiate goal.

Oakland transfer Deanna Colarossi doubled the UMass lead when she chased down a looping pass from Jenna Goodwin that bounced just behind the last UVM defender allowing Colarossi to tap a shot past Leiby. The goal was Colarossi’s first for her new team and was Goodwins’ first assist on the season.

Eight minutes into the second half UMass stretched the lead to 3-0 when freshman Kayla Austin streaked down the left sideline and attempted to center a pass for a teammate who was matching her down the middle of the field when the ball knuckled in the air and bent into the net. It was the freshman’s first collegiate goal in only her second career game.

The Minutewomen capped the scoring on a 35 yard laser from senior Kelsey Anderson that found the upper left hand corner of the goal, just out of the reach of a leaping Leiby. For Anderson it was her third career goal and her first goal since her freshman year.

The shutout was preserved by sophomore keeper Emily Cota with an impressive save in the 89th minute when freshman midfielder Midori Eckenstein broke up the field and fired a shot that Cota got her finger tips on, slowing it down enough for a teammate to come down and knock it out of bounds. Cota made eight saves in recording her second career shutout. Her previous shutout came last season in her first career start against Duquesne.
