Anytime that you graduate two key seniors and see two other starters transfer out of the program, including your leading scorer, you know that points are going to be a premium. Add in the fact that reigning A-10 rookie of the year Jasmine Watson was out with an injury and the Minutewomen were playing without five of their six leading scorers from last season. That was the case for new UMass coach Sharon Dawley and the Minutewomen as they fell to the George Mason Patriots in their season opener at the Mullins Center tonight by a score of 60-55.
Leading by seven points with just over seven minutes to play, the Minutewomen went cold, missing eight of their next nine shots as the Patriots moved out to a 51-46 lead with 2:47 to play. An Emilie Teuscher three pointer with 2:18 to go got the Minutewomen with in two at 51-49, but they would not get any closer.
Senior Cerie Mosgrove lead the Minutewomen with 17 points and added six rebounds. Making her first collegiate start, sophomore Shakia Robinson paced the Minutewomen on the boards with eight rebounds, five on the offensive end, and put up a career high 12 points.
The Patriots were led by Taleia Moton who had 19 points on the strength of a seven for nine performance at the free throw line. Senior Brittany Eley added 14 points off the bench for the Patriots.
