The Kentucky Derby was months ago and summer has faded away, but you can still drink a cool mint julep. It’s a refreshing drink any time of year, particularly so if you use a mint herbal tea as the base of your drink.

Traditional mint juleps are made any number of ways. They can be made from a ready-made mint julep mix. For that method, just pour the mix over ice and add the bourbon. They can be made by putting lightly bruised mint in a glass, adding simple syrup, and then adding bourbon. They can be made with homemade simple syrup infused with mint. You can soak the mint in bourbon for hours and then add the simple syrup. There are probably as many variations on the recipe as there are people who make it.

Here’s a very simple way to make a mint julep, particularly if you want more cool drink in proportion to the alcohol.

Mint Magic herbal julep recipe

  • 2 bags Celestial Seasonings Mint Magic herbal tea
  • 8 ounces of boiling water
  • Simple syrup or sugarless sweetener
  • 1 shot of bourbon
  • Fresh mint sprigs for garnish

Put the herbal tea into a teapot or other heatproof container. Pour the boiling water over it and let it steep for 4 to 6 minutes. Remove the herbal teabags and squeeze the liquid in them back into the container. Add sweetening now. Then cool and chill in the refrigerator. When it’s cold, pour it over ice and add the bourbon. Makes one serving

Tips and hints:

If you don’t like sweet drinks, you can skip the sweetening. Magic mint herbal tea is good without sweetening.

If you want less tea in proportion to your bourbon, either make less tea, double the bourbon and split it into two drinks instead of one.

You can skip the bourbon altogether and have a virgin mint julep
