German camera manufacturer Minox has just gone retro, albeit in a one-third scale. Result: the Minox Digital Classic Camera (DCC) 14, which takes inspiration from the 1960s rangefinder cameras at a third the size of the originals. Now, while small scale replica cameras are normally nothing more than toys, the Minox DCC 14 and the rest of the DCC line of cameras are certainly not toys.
So, what of the mini cameras?
First of all, despite their pint-sized bodies, they have big resolution, as in 14Mp, which is neck-in-neck with the big boys. Normally, small cameras have small resolving power to match.
Another unexpected feature of the Minox DCC line: accessories. If the camera in itself isn't enough, there are lens converters, a flash unit (also retro-[styled), and an add-on viewfinder for people who don't like the idea of composing shots with the LCD screen, which is a 2” display.
As for other technical features, they include a 41mm film equivalent f2.4 lens that is made out of 5 miniature glass elements, SD card compatibility with up to 32GB cards, a 10 second self-timer, a removable, rechargeable battery, video mode (640 x 480 resolution) and of course, its small size. The Minox DCC line cameras easily fit into the palm of the hand and just as easily into pockets.
