I am one of the few that reserved a 128GB Surface Pro this past weekend. It is indeed a great device and have swayed the opinion of every Mac lover that I know so far. A few that I thought were attached to their iPads made the switch to Pro and RT even this weekend. More on that later.
After playing with the device and getting to my office today. I installed all my productivity apps, networks shares and had my Surface set to do some real work. I noticed that the device would not start from sleep properly. The device appearing to be sleep was also very warm. I had a full day and was going to go down to the Microsoft store; there just was no time. I figured I would just call support once I got home.
I started a chat session with Microsoft support and gave them the errors I saw in the event log. Everything was pointing to a corrupt update. I was instructed to perform a backup and run the "Remove everything and reinstall Windows" option. I ran a backup, that was way faster than I expected. I really did not want to have to start from scratch and have to reinstall everything since restoring and image was out of the question.
I ended my chat and then the engineer in me took hold and then I had an idea. I went back to launch day and looked at the customizations I made. The one change I made which I have done to all my mobile systems through the years is to uncheck the option to turn network devices off to save power. I went into my device manager and checked it on. I then closed the type cover. I was more than elated to see the system finally resume from sleep as it normally should.
I went back to Microsoft support and reported the resolution and they were just as happy to get the update. I would expect their engineers will have a fix or something in the near future. In the meantime I want to be sure anyone else that may have a Surface Pro and the same tendencies will benefit from my experience.
