Minnetonka Skippers upset BSM Red Knights

Two schools playing near the site of the Section 6AA boys hockey tournament, Mariucci Arena, took to the outdoor rink at TCF Bank Stadium Saturday afternoon as Jack Kuehn's two assists helped the Minnetonka Skippers upset the seventh ranked Benilde-St.Margaret's Red Knights 4-1 in the High School Hockey Faceoff in Minneapolis.

The Red Knights got the early lead in the first period when Peter Heimbold made a right side pass to Spencer Naas and he sped down the ice like a train on the soon to be open Green Line light rail tracks and found the net.

The Skippers steered their ship into high gear with a three goal second period. The first goal came from AJ Klein, who found an open spot near the crease and scored. Kuehn, who assisted on the first goal, picked up an assist on the second. Mario Bertogliat was on the left side of the cage and he made a centering pass to Sean McAndrews. McAndrews' shot sailed into the net to put Minnetonka in front. They concluded the second period scoring on John Schuldt's goal from the left point with 1:32 remaining.

BSM had a couple of opportunities to trim the lead to one in the third period, but they couldn't cash in. The first came with Minnetonka's Zach VanSant served an interference penalty but their strong defense and penalty killing kept the margin at two. The second cost the Red Knights after head coach Ken Pauly pulled Jalen Long with 2:15 left for a sixth attacker and the Skippers sank the St. Louis Park school's chances of a comeback when Ben Hersman passed to Gavin Payne on the left point and he delivered it into the empty net. The sun made its first appearance with a little over 14 minutes in the period.

BSM outshot Minnetonka 37-20.

The Skippers evened their record at 7-7 and host the Hopkins Royals on Thursday, January 16 in a 7 PM game at the Pagel Activity Center. The Red Knights fell 10-4-2 and hostt the Blake Bears at The Rec Center, also on the 16th at 7 PM.
