Shades of blue were present Thursday night at Einar Anderson Stadium as Mitch Felknor and Vance Barnes scored two touchdowns apiece to lead the host Minnetonka Skippers to a 38-0 win over the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars.
Neither team scored in the first quarter but Jefferson, off to a surprising 2-0 start put early pressure on Minnetonka quarterback Nick Rooney and Phil Maciej sacked the senior quarterback.
The Skippers got on the board 59 seconds into the second quarter when Jason Witherspoon scored on a nine yard touchdown run. The Jaguars had a chance to even the score as Noah Luedtke completed a pair of passes to Peter Knutson but the Skippers Matt Dille stopped the drive with an interception. Felknor almost had his first touchdown but it was called back due to an ineligible man down field. They got a consolation prize in a 13 yard field goal from Perry Duff Smith to give Minnetonka a 10-0 halftime lead.
Minnetonka, ranked second in Class 6A, found the end zone twice in the third quarter. The first was benefited bu Jacob Bom recovering a fumbled punt snap at Jefferson six yard line and Barnes scored on a two yard run. The second came on a one play drive when Rooney threw a 45 touchdown pass to Felknor and the Skippers leaded extended to 24-0.
The Skippers tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter with the Rooney to Felknor combination striking again, this time from 23 yards. On the second, Anthony Tatum returned a Jaguar punt to their five yard line and Barnes ran it in to wrap up the scoring.
Witherspoon ran for 72 yards. He also 40 receiving yards.
Minnetonka improved their record to 4-0 and will host the Hopkins Royals Friday, September 20 in the annual Homecoming football game. Jefferson fell to 2-1 and will travel to Lakeville North on the 20th. Both games will begin at 7 PM.
