Minnesota Wild sleepwalk through loss in Dallas

The Minnesota Wild were chasing the Dallas Stars the entire way in a 3-0 loss Tuesday at the American Airlines Center.

The Wild started slow and never got into the game and could not stay out of the penalty box.

The Wild (27-20-5) were called for 11 penalties (including a throwing the stick call on Darcy Kuemper that resulted in a penalty shot) while the Stars were called for just six penalties.

The Stars (22-20-7) turned their seven power play goals into two goals with the man advantage and one shortly after the conclusion of a power play.

Kuemper was the only Wild player that came to play, but in the third he fell into the lazy, mindless play that plagued his teammates for most of the game. With Stars defenseman Jordie Benn coming right out of the penalty box, Kuemper went to play the puck in the corner, but lost control. Benn had an opportunity to get the net, but Kuemper threw his stick to stop the scoring chance. Throwing your stick results in a penalty shot and Benn easily scored on a fake shot to forehand to cap the scoring.

The Stars got on the board 13 minutes and 18 seconds into the first period when Vernon Fiddler fired a wrist shot from the point that glanced off of Clayton Stoner and into the net 24 seconds after the completion of the Wild’s first penalty.

The Stars continued to keep the pressure on the Wild and Erik Cole beat Kuemper with a wrist shot from the bottom of the circles for a power play goal.

Ray Whitney stickhandled around Kuemper on the backdoor with two seconds remaining on the Stars’ fourth power play of the game to extend the Stars’ lead to three.

The Wild return to action Thursday against the Chicago Blackhawks at the Xcel Energy Center.
