Zach Parise and Mikko Koivu beat Varlamov with the Wild’s only two shootout attempts and Josh Harding stopped two of three Avalanche shots to seal the 2-1 victory Saturday.
Nino Niederreiter re-directed a shot by Ryan Suter past Semyon Varlamov with three minutes and 53 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
The Wild (19-11-5) pressured the Avalanche for most of the final 10 minutes of the third period and overtime. They nearly ended the game several times before the shootout, but could not get the winner. The Wild consistently missed the net or could not get good opportunities to the net. The most notable failed attempt was Keith Ballard’s re-direction in overtime that went wide.
The Avalanche (21-9-1) got on the board first when Maxime Talbot deflected a shot by Cory Sarich midway through the second period.
Harding kept the game scoreless in the first period with a sprawling save on P.A. Parenteau with the Avalanche on the power play. Parenteau received a pass on the backdoor with a wide open net, but Harding reached across and knocked the shot down with his glove.
The Wild return to action Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks at the Xcel Energy Center.
