The Minnesota Wild did everything right in Saturday's win over the Blackhawks, but when the two teams met at the Xcel Energy Center on Monday everything went wrong.
The Blackhawks (7-2-3) broke the game open early in the third period en route to a 5-1 victory.
"For sure, our best third period with a lead," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "We've given up some leads. We had some offense off it, but I thought we checked well and had a lot of puck time."
The Wild (6-4-3) were able to even the game midway through the second period and were outshooting the Blackhawks.
Sloppy, mistake filled play by the Wild allowed the Blackhawks to pull away and put the game away.
"Obviously, our third period wasn't what we wanted it to be," Jason Pominville said. "We sat back and kind of stopped playing."
Pominville scored the Wild's only with a slap shot over the glove shoulder of Corey Crawford off a pass from Mikael Granlund.
The Wild return to action Friday against the Montreal Canadiens at the Xcel Energy Center.
