However, Jason Pominville and Charlie Coyle scored goals 57 seconds apart early in the third period to give the Wild a 2-0 win at the Xcel Energy Center.
The Wild (16-8-5) dominated the puck possession and offensive zone time in the first period and carried that through two periods without getting on the scoreboard.
“We did a lot of good things, but again had a tough time find a way to score,” Pominville said. “We were able to get one and then get another one not long after that.”
Pominville broke the scoreless tie by shooting his second chance shot over the glove hand of Ray Emery off a pass from Mikko Koivu at the 3:52 mark of the final period.
Coyle quickly extended the lead by knocking a rebound off a shot by Jared Spurgeon past Emery.
The Wild had numerous opportunities to get the first goal of the game, but failed to beat Emery. Most notably, Kyle Brodziak re-directed a pass from the corner right into the chest of Emery in the first period and Zach Parise ran out of room and slid a shot into the pads of Emery on a 2-on-1 odd-man rush with Koivu late in the second period.
Josh Harding stopped all 21 shots he faced, including 11 in the third period. He preserved the shutout by diving across the crease to deflect a shot by Jakub Voracek into the corner.
