Minnesota Wild drop second game in Colorado

Two nights after playing well enough to win, the Minnesota Wild were blown out in Game 2 by the Colorado Avalanche 4-2 Saturday at the Pepsi Center.

Paul Statsny, Gabriel Landeskog and Nathan MacKinnon completely took the game over in the second period with a pair of goals. Landeskog was the recipient of both passing plays for the goals.

MacKinnon dropped a pass to Landeskog at the top of the circles to break a 1-1 tie and give the Avalanche the lead for good. Landeskog finished off a behind-the-back pass from Statsny nine minutes to extend the lead to two goals. Both linemates assisted on each goal. Ilya Bryzgalov, despite having no chance on the third goal, was pulled at that point.

The Wild gave that line too much time and space and they took advantage. MacKinnon was allowed to enter the zone with very little pressure on all three Avalanche goals.

The Wild (0-2) scored first when Charlie Coyle had a centering pass from Mikko Koivu glance off him and into the net four minutes and 18 seconds into the game. The Wild were buzzing and controlling the game at that point.

The Avalanche (2-0) turned the game around two minutes and two seconds later when MacKinnon beat Bryzgalov under the arm. Statsny recorded the first of his three assists on the goal.

The Wild made it interesting when Marco Scandella re-directed a pass from Koivu between Semyon Varlamov’s legs, but Statsny capped the victory just over one minute later.

The Wild return to action Monday against the Colorado Avalanche in Game 3 of the quarterfinal round series at the Xcel Energy Center.
