Minnesota Wild drop Game 5 in Chicago

The Minnesota Wild fall in Game 5 for the second time in these playoffs. This time in regulation and less hatred toward the officiating. The hatred was aimed at the Wild for their drop in play over the final two periods of a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks Sunday at the United Center.

Jonathan Toews out muscled Mikael Granlund in the corner and in front of the net to score the game-winning goal four minutes and 33 seconds into the third period. Toews slowed Granlund on the way to a loose puck in the corner and got position on him on the backdoor to knock a rebound into the open net.

The Blackhawks (3-2) got on the board near the midway point of the second period when Bryan Bickell deflected a shot by Patrick Kane on the power play. Jonas Brodin was assessed a hooking penalty to give the Blackhawks the man advantage. Brodin has taken three penalties in Chicago and all three resulted in Blackhawk goals.

The Wild (2-3) had a decent first period and held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. From there the Blackhawks took over and dominated play despite holding just a slight edge in shots on goal. The Wild were drawing praise for their opening period, but the Blackhawks had opportunities and a lot offensive zone possession time.

Erik Haula scored the only goal of the first period when he raced past Kane and around Duncan Keith to get a clean shot at the Blackhawks goal. Then he skated around Brent Seabrook to get to the rebound and knock it off Corey Crawford and into the net. Jared Spurgeon recorded the only assist with a pass in his defensive zone to Haula.

Both teams will resume their second round Stanley Cup playoff series Tuesday at the Xcel Energy Center for Game 6.
