The Devils entered the game in the second night of back-to-back games, but knocked the Wild back early in the game. The Devils had a 6-0 edge in shots on goal before the Wild got anything toward Cory Schneider. The Wild's first shot on goal came at about the seven-minute mark of the opening period.
The Devils (3-7-4) were able to draw two penalties early in the period, but could not generate the scoring chances they needed.
"The killers did everything right, getting the puck down, getting in the lanes," Wild goaltender Josh Harding said. "That was the story early on. The guys battled hard after that and we got to our game."
Devils head coach Peter DeBoer echoed Harding's feeling on the start to the game. He said after the game that he felt they were doing the things they needed to do, but lost momentum after the Wild killed a couple power plays.
Harding stopped all 19 shots he faced and did not give up a good scoring chance in the process to record his second shutout of the season.
"The guys are making it easy," Harding said. "It's never about one player. We win as a team and lose as a team."
Mikael Granlund got the scoring started with first goal of the season. He was in the right spot at the right time as Nino Niederreiter knocked the puck to the top of the crease while Schneider was scrambling to find it. Granlund has the entire net to shoot at and did not miss.
Niederreiter later added two more assists for his first career multi-point game and now has his first point streak.
Torrey Mitchell also scored his first goal of the season. He drove the net and had a rebound bounce off him and into the net to give the Wild a two-goal lead.
Dany Heatley scored his second goal of the season (both on the power play) by re-directing a shot by Keith Ballard past Schneider.
The Devils pulled Schneider with just under four minutes remaining to get an extra attacker on the ice. Jason Pominville took advantage to extend his goal streak to four games with a shot from center ice into the open net.
The Wild (8-4-3) return to action Tuesday against the Calgary Flames at the Xcel Energy Center.
