The Minnesota Wild have few roster spots with the emergence of their young stars. However, a few players still need to supplement the roster. The Wild enter the offseason with 14 unrestricted free agents and eight restricted free agents.
Here is restricted free agent defenseman Jonathon Blum.
2013-14 Statistics: 54 games played, 7 goals, 22 assists, 29 points, minus-13 rating, 23 penalty minutes, 6 power play goals, 111 shots on goal (Iowa); 15 games played, 1 assist, 1 point, minus-1 rating, 11 shots on goal (Minnesota)
Qualifying Offer: $715,000
Outlook: The Wild like Blum. There is no doubt about that. The belief is that he spent most of last season in Iowa because of the numbers game.
There were already seven defensemen with roster spots, including two that shoot right-handed (like Blum) and two left-handers with right-side experience. But, this offseason, two of them are unrestricted free agents, including one right-handed shooter.
Blum performed well enough in his 106 career NHL games with the Nashville Predators and Wild that he should get a qualifying offer. He then would have a very good chance to make the Wild’s roster for the 2014-15 season.
