Minnesota Wild 2014 free agent analysis: John Curry

The Minnesota Wild have few roster spots with the emergence of their young stars. However, a few players still need to supplement the roster. The Wild enter the offseason with 14 unrestricted free agents and eight restricted free agents.

Here is unrestricted free agent John Curry.

2013-14 Team(s): Iowa Wild (AHL), Orlando Solar Bears (ECHL), Minnesota Wild (NHL)

2013-14 Statistics: 19 games played, 7-9-2 record, 1 shutout, 597 shots against, .920 save percentage, 2.62 goals against average (Iowa); 13 games played, 10-2-0 record, 410 shots against, .917 save percentage, 2.66 goals against average (Orlando); 2 games played, 1-0-0 record, 57 shots against, .930 save percentage, 3.00 goals against average

Outlook: The Wild were decimated by injuries to goaltenders when the Olympic break came around. So the team signed John Curry to provide depth and insurance in the organization. He was playing well for Iowa and had some NHL experience. It was a natural fit.

The Wild acquired Ilya Bryzgalov after signing the journeyman AHL veteran, but needed him after Darcy Kuemper sustained an injury. Curry played the backup role until getting an opportunity to start against the St. Louis Blues in the second to last game of the season. He gave up two goals, but stopped over 40 shots to get the win.

The Wild will likely want to do the same thing they did with Curry this season as they did last season. The question, however, is if Curry is willing to sign with an AHL contract with Iowa and then wait and see if injuries occur to Niklas Backstrom and Josh Harding again. Curry, a 30-year-old Shorewood, Minn. native, may not have a better opportunity than fourth or fifth on the Wild’s depth chart, given the recent injury history of Backstrom and Harding.
