The Minnesota Wild have few roster spots with the emergence of their young stars. However, a few players still need to supplement the roster. The Wild enter the offseason with 14 unrestricted free agents and eight restricted free agents.

Here is unrestricted free agent forward Cody McCormick.

2013-14 Team(s): Buffalo Sabres (NHL), Minnesota Wild (NHL)

2013-14 Statistics: 29 games played, 1 goal, 4 assists, 5 points, 45 penalty minutes, minus-8 rating, 20 shots on goal (Sabres); 14 games played, 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 points 7 penalty minutes, plus-2 rating, 6 shots on goal (Wild-regular season); 13 games played, 1 goal, 1 point, 14 penalty minutes, 6 shots on goal (Wild-playoffs)

Outlook: There was little to be made of McCormick’s name being included in the trade with the Sabres at the deadline in March. He may have been seen as a “throw-in” piece to the trade, but McCormick fit in really well on the fourth line. He proved capable of killing penalties, winning draws and bringing a physical element. He played his best in a Wild uniform in the playoffs.

The Wild are likely to try really hard to re-sign the 31-year-old. His expiring contract carried a cap hit of $1.2 million, which is reasonable and likely in the neighborhood of what he will get this summer. Of all the Wild’s unrestricted free agent forwards, McCormick is the most likely player to play for the Wild next season.
