Minnesota Wild 2014 free agent analysis: Carson McMillan

The Minnesota Wild have few roster spots with the emergence of their young stars. However, a few players still need to supplement the roster. The Wild enter the offseason with 14 unrestricted free agents and eight restricted free agents.

Here is unrestricted free agent Carson McMillan.

2013-14 Team(s): Iowa Wild (AHL), Minnesota Wild (NHL)

2013-14 Statistics: 68 games played, 12 goals, 16 assists, 28 points, 36 penalty minutes, 2 power play goals, 1 shorthanded goal, 132 shots on goal (Iowa); 1 game played (Minnesota)

Outlook: McMillan is a tough player to figure out. He has shown the ability to play a checking line role. He has speed, size and a physical presence. But for some reason, he hasn’t been able to remain in the Wild’s lineup for more than a emergency basis.

He is now five years into his professional career and he has 16 games of NHL experience. In those games, he has notched two goals and three assists. He should be capable of playing a full season in the NHL on a checking line role with the ability to move up the ladder if necessary.

It is unlikely the Wild will re-sign him, but he should get a pretty good opportunity to play a full season in the NHL somewhere next season.
