Minnesota Vikings draft analysis: David Yankey

Position: Offensive Lineman

Number: 66

College: Stanford

Height: 6-6

Weight: 315

My analysis: He plays with power and physicality. He is not afraid of contact and gets the better of it. He can pull and get out in front of the running back to lead the way. He is not an elite athlete. He is a road grater that can open a hole. He needs to improve as a pass blocker. His pad level can get too high, which will leave him vulnerable to good defensive tackles.’s Nolan Nawrocki’s Bottom Line: Big, physical, smart, serviceable offensive guard who will not score many style points, but generally gets the job done. Has starter-caliber ability and fits best in a power scheme that takes advantage of his size and pulling ability.

The skinny: Yankey has a good shot at supplanting Charlie Johnson as the starting left guard fairly quickly, but needs to improve some aspects of his game first. projected him as a second to third round selection. That was a bit too early, but taking him in the fifth round is a good get for the Vikings. He also can serve as the top backup at both guard and tackle positions. He needs to clean up his game to become a consistent starter, but can do it.
