Minnesota Vikings add depth in the third round

The Minnesota Vikings entered the second day of the NFL draft with two third round picks. They parlayed those picks into a defensive end and a running back.

The Vikings took Oregon State defensive end Scott Crichton with the eight pick of the third round, 72nd overall. He is a stout edge defender that finished his collegiate career as the Beavers’ all-time leader in forced fumbles (10) and third in sacks (22.5). The 6-foot-3-inch, 273-pound three-year starter finished last season with 19 tackles for a loss and 7.5 sacks. Mike Mayock of NFL.com described Crichton in his draft analysis as “a poor man’s Chris Long.”

He, along with first round draft pick Anthony Barr, are considered players that can play defensive end in a 4-3 scheme or outside linebacker in 3-4 scheme. Both players give the Vikings more scheme flexibility.

The Vikings completed their day by taking running back Jerick McKinnon from Georgia Southern. He played quarterback for the Eagles. He led the Eagles triple option offense. He posted top combine results in the 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle. The 5-foot-9-inch, 209-pound athlete ran for 1,050 yards and 12 touchdowns while throwing for 171 yards and four touchdowns. He also had three catches for 23 yards.

“He is a good upside player,” Mayock said in his draft analysis. “He scored the winning touchdown when they upset Florida this year. They don’t even know where to play him. He could start as a defensive back, but I think he’ll be on offense in the NFL.”

The Vikings have four picks on Saturday; two in the fifth round, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.
