Minnesota uses Cammarata goal in win at Hockey City Classic

In front of a crowd of 45,021 at TCF Bank Stadium, the men’s hockey team for the Minnesota Golden Gophers did something that had already been done twice before during the season: Shutout an opponent.

Behind a second period goal by Taylor Cammarata (his fifth of the season) at 4:20 of the second period, the calling card on the night happened to be goaltending for Minnesota. Adam Wilcox, in his twentieth decision on the season, was simply solid. Stopping twenty-one Ohio State shots is tough enough, but only surviving by a goal is even tougher.

Another talking point were the penalties, or lack thereof. Five were called in the game in total and three resulted in power plays. Minnesota ended up 0-2 on the man advantage to Ohio State’s 0-1, and every penalty called on Friday night was a minor penalty.

Ohio State goaltender Matt Tomkins made twenty-six saves on a night where Minnesota’s best shooting period occurred in the middle. The Gophers put thirteen shots on net, or exactly half of the total game output. One went in when all was set and done and that’s what mattered.

The same two teams convene at Mariucci Arena Saturday as part of Hockey Day Minnesota. The game is scheduled for 5pm.
