Minnesota and three of the four other Division I hockey schools converge on the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul starting Friday as the North Star Cup debuts. Let’s take a look “inside the numbers.”

20: Minnesota, in thirty-two games at Xcel Energy Center, has twenty wins compared to twelve losses (a .645 win percentage). The Gophers will compete in the Big Ten Tournament and host the NCAA West Regional, both of which will be staged in St. Paul.

23.4: Of the four teams, Minnesota State’s 23.4% power play output ranks first entering the North Star Cup. Minnesota State has twenty-nine goals on the man-up in one hundred and twenty-four tries.

0: Here’s your goose egg. Of the last thirty games combined versus UMD, Minnesota State, and St. Cloud State dating back to 2010, none have been played in St. Paul. Minnesota leads the all-time series against all three opponents.

10: Minnesota is unbeaten in its last ten starts, dating back to November 24th, 2013. The Gophers were beaten by UMD 6-2 at Mariucci Arena that night. The ten game streak is tied for best in the nation with Boston College.

361: Minnesota’s Don Lucia ranks second in Gopher coaching wins in fifteen seasons behind the bench. Doug Woog is the all-time coaching wins leader with 390.

6: In seventeen career games, St. Cloud State, who is Minnesota’s opening round opponent on Friday, has only six wins at Xcel Energy Center. The series between Minnesota and SCSU at the X is tied 2-2-0.

103: St. Cloud State’s Nic Dowd has played in one hundred and three consecutive games for the Huskies, dating back to the 2010-11 season. Cory Thorson’s 101 game streak started in 2011-12.
