The matchups for the 2014 Mariucci Classic as well as a home and home series with St. Cloud State have been finalized according to a release from the University of Minnesota today.
The 24th annual Mariucci Classic, named for former Gopher John Mariucci (for which Mariucci Arena is named) sees the Gophers host RIT, UMass-Lowell, and Merrimack on January 2-3, 2015. RIT and UMass-Lowell will draw one semifinal while the Gophers will face Merrimack in their own semifinal. Both games take place on Friday, January 2. The third place game (for semifinal losers) and championship game will take place on Saturday, January 3 with game times to be announced later.
Minnesota has also finalized dates for its non-conference home and home series with the St. Cloud State Huskies, scheduled for October 31-November 1. The matchup on Halloween night takes place in St. Cloud while Saturday night’s matchup occurs in Minneapolis. According to data gathered via College Hockey Stats, Minnesota won both meetings last year versus the Huskies, with Minnesota scoring eight combined goals in the two games. Flash back to the 2012-13 season, and in February 2013, the teams split the series with Minnesota scoring seven combined goals.
This season will mark Minnesota’s 93rd campaign in the history of the program. Minnesota has won three straight conference titles—two in the WCHA and one in the Big Ten—and the Gophers have been to the Frozen Four in two of the last three games.
All told, the 2014-15 schedule is taking shape nicely, and it’s not too long now until the hockey season is upon us once again.
