Many church leaders have a difficult time gaining the attention of today's youth and young adults. With smart phone apps, social media, music videos, and movies, pastors are trying to re-package the delivery and distribution of their messages to reach a generation whose attention span is very short.
Cross-Centered Ministries Senior Pastor, Reggie Pitchford who shepherds the flock in Rialto, CA seems to have accomplished what so many pastors covet- reach the youth and young people. Reggie (as many of his members call him) along with his wife, Marlisa Pitchford served as youth ministers for many years at Zoe Christian Fellowship (Whittier, CA) where Dr. Edward A. Smith is the Senior pastor.
His experience with the future leaders is evidently paying off. It appears as though the majority of the members at Cross Centered Ministries are young people. Their praise team consists of vocalists who wear jeans, have colorful tattoos and dance exuberantly. This past Sunday, January 20th, Gospel music artist Aaron Mason sang songs from his albums that rival the most noteworthy secular music stars.
The Word was elegantly spoken by Doc Josh (Joshua Smith). Unlike, some pastors who call themselves Doc, he has actually earned a PHD is a college professor. Oh! By the way, he is the oldest son of Pastor Ed Smith. His delivery of the message, "Hit the Re-Set Button was powerful and insightful. Joshua is gifted at weaving Power Point presentations into his sermons, while keeping the congregations attention. He has recorded CDs on such subjects as iChurch and many others that tap into the consciousness of the youth and young adults.
Using technology and creative ways to attract and retain young people in your ministry can produce results. But nothing replaces showing them love and giving them attention. Pastor Reggie has a genuine love and concern for the young generation and it shows. His message to his congregation is simple- to fall in love with God. He emphasizes by opening your heart to the Lord, living a holy life will be easier.
