Two roaming pit bulls ferociously attacked the livestock and a miniature horse on a family’s property in southern California.
Tehachapi investigating authorities said the attack proved deadly for Piper, a 15-year-old miniature horse. At the end of the skirmish, the little horse was killed by one of the two fierce pit bulls.
The horse and livestock belong to property owner Roxanne Borgna of Tehachapi. The death of the miniature horse Piper has taken a painful toll on everyone. The attack was brutal and is unforgettable, and losing Piper in this way was painful, stated Borgna.
The Borgnas are not likely to forget the horrendous attack by the dogs any time soon.
"I've seen the two pit bulls and I looked down and I yelled ‘Oh my God, they got my little horse and about then, the grey pit bull turned around and started growling at me and coming towards me," Borgna said.
She called police. Borgna grabbed a gun and fired it to scare the dogs away, but it was too late for Piper.
Borgna says, “I have spent years raising horses here at my home. Losing one of them in this vicious way is hard to take.”
“They're my family,” she told a local ABC reporter.
"It’s heart breaking," said Shirley Toler, Borgna’s daughter. Toler grew up with the horses and has frequently used them for personal therapy since she’s been battling a serious health issue.
"This is big, financially, emotionally, mentally, everything,” reflects Toler, “He was a big part of our family," she states.
Borgna says she keeps her horses securely penned just so she can prevent intruders from getting at them. The dogs managed to get through the fence.
The dogs are now in the custody of animal control.
Authorities say this investigation continues.
