Butterfly Bake Shop is one of the many dessert-related offerings in the new Limelight Marketplace in Chelsea. While they offer custom cakes as well as cookies, cupcakes, and brownies on their website, if you’re looking for instant gratification, head down to the Limelight to pick up one of their mini cakes.
The mini cakes are arranged like jewels in a pristine cold case in the bright marketplace. Each cake is a small round, two layers cut into a precise circular shape, displayed on thick cardboard and rimmed with stiff acetate to give a classy, sharp appearance. The candy butterfly crowning each creation is the proverbial cherry on top.
The flavor selection isn’t extensive, but it is creative. If you’re a traditionalist, go for the red velvet with cream cheese frosting, a mild, spongy cake with a smooth frosting boasting a faint cream cheesy tang (for those who like their treats on the mild side, this one’s for you). If you’re in the mood to mix it up a bit, go for the red velvet with toasted coconut frosting.
For chocolate lovers, there’s a traditional chocolate cake-chocolate frosting combo. Are you a mocha person? Head straight for the chocolate cake with cappuccino buttercream. Dreaming of the islands? There’s even a vanilla cake with guava and dulce de leche frosting, intriguing to say the least.
Each cake is $4.25 but is about the size of two traditional cupcakes, so you get your money’s worth. If you’re looking for an individual birthday cake to bring to a coworker, or a decadent party favor, or even simply something to brighten your day, Butterfly will make your spirits fly.
