In Minecraft, texture packs replace the textures in place for blocks, characters and even mobs. The Plastic Texture Pack transforms the look of the game into something that looks cleaner and simpler with smooth glossy textures.
A release date and price have yet to be revealed but Microsoft promises details soon. The recently released Mass Effect Mash-Up Pack costs $4.99 so the texture pack should be significantly cheaper as it doesn't come with the custom music, user interface and themed world.
Future texture packs confirmed by 4J Studios so far include the Natural Texture Pack and a Medieval Texture Pack while possible Mash-Up Packs include packs based on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Halo, Call of Duty, Borderlands, and Star Wars. Licensing agreements for those need to be worked out first.
Speaking of licensing agreements, 4J Studios and Microsoft are looking into bringing over popular PC texture packs created by the Minecraft community but needs to work out usage rights with the owners of those packs first.
For those wondering if texture packs will come to the upcoming PS4, PS3, PS Vita and Xbox One versions of Minecraft, 4J Studios has confirmed that those copies will be based on Title Update 13 (TU13) which includes texture pack and Mash-Up Pack support.
