'Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition' passes five million in sales just as 2012 ends

It's no surprise that when "Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition" launched back in May on the Xbox Live Arcade that the game sold well. It's just how well the game continues to sell, seven months later.

The do-it-yourself mining game has officially passed five million copies sold, just before 2012 came to a close. Mojang's business developer, Daniel Kaplan, dropped the news via Twitter.

"On the last day of 2012, Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition hit 5 million copies sold! Crazy! Amazing! Great way to end the year :) Thanks!"

The game not only burned up the sales charts, but also the most played on Xbox Live charts as well. It shot up to number three behind "Call of Duty: Black Ops" and "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3". The game would hold the number three spot for a few months before taking the number one spot in November, just for a week, before "Halo 4" and "Black Ops 2" showed up.

Even with new shooters and Triple-A titles showing up, "Minecraft" continues to sell through the roof and be one of the most played games on the Xbox 360.
