Mojang and Sony announced the release date Monday for Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition and it is literally right around the corner. Details on what will be contained and when to expect skin and texture packs was also revealed.
Minecraft: PS3 Edition will be released Tuesday, Dec. 17 for North America and Wednesday, Dec. 18 for Europe. Though no price was set, the Xbox 360 Edition sells for $19.99 which will likely be matched on the PSN Store.
For those wondering, no release dates were announced for the PS4 Edition or PS Vita Edition.
The content of Minecraft: PS3 Edition will be "pretty much identical" according to Mojang's Owen Good who confirmed that it will be developed in tandem with the Xbox 360 version of the game going forward.
Meanwhile, the first skin and texture packs should launch either alongside Minecraft: PS3 Edition or not long afterward. There are numerous skin packs available for the Xbox 360 Edition already and the third texture pack was released just last week.
There is a chance that some Playstation-centric skin or texture packs could be released as well though Mash-Up packs for games like The Last of Us would fit in as well.
Minecraft console developer 4J Studios announced last week that the Xbox 360 Edition has already passed the 10 million copies sold mark while Mojang revealed that the PC version has sold 13 million. With a flurry of new console releases coming, the creators of Minecraft will likely be building Scrooge McDuck-like money vaults soon.
