'Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition' getting a retail disk release in May

Mojang announced Wednesday that “Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition” will receive a retail disk release this May. The move will be seen by many as a no-brainer following the success of the “Xbox 360 Edition” retail release last year.

“Minecraft: PS3 Edition” has been available as a download title since last Dec. 2013. Since that time, the game has been purchased and downloaded more than 1.5 million times, according to Mojang’s Owen Hill.

The retail release will arrive on May 16, 2014 and be based on the Title Update 14 (TU14) version of the game. That means that those that purchase the physical disk will need to connect to the internet at least once to get the TU15 patch that fixed a slew of bugs with TU14 and likely TU16 as well, which is expected to be another bug fix.

“Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition” received a retail disk release in June of last year, just over a year from when it was first released as a digital download only title. The game is sold for $19.99 and has been a steady resident in the top ten games sold both in North America and Europe since its release.

How the “Playstation 3 Edition” will fare as a retail release remains to be seen though sales of the digital version have not been at the same pace as the “Xbox 360 Edition”. In part, this is because the game has already sold so many copies for other systems with the Xbox 360 version at 12 million, the “Pocket Edition” at over 21 million and the PC version is around 15 million.

There’s also the case that the next-gen versions and PS Vita version of “Minecraft” are seemingly right around the corner. Developer 4J Studios has stated that there’s still much work to do on the “Xbox One Edition” and “Playstation 4 Edition” but a release appears to be close as the developer recently teased fans with an image of the game running on the both Sony’s handheld and next-gen console.
