While 4J Studios has not been shy about teasing Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition and Minecraft: Playstation 4 Edition, the PS Vita Edition of the popular sandbox game has not been touched on most. That changed Friday as the developer discretely showed the first image of the handheld console running Minecraft.
4J Studios posted a picture of Perfect Dark Rum on Twitter along with a reminder that Perfect Dark XBLA is currently on sale on the Xbox Store for 70 percent off as a pretense to offer a teaser image. The picture of the bottle of rum is joined by an Xbox One controller directly behind it, a PS4 directly to its left and a PS Vita handheld at the top left clearly running Minecraft.
If that wasn’t enough of a tease, the monitor behind the bottle is also clearly running Minecraft: Playstation 4 Edition as noted by the autosave text message displayed on the screen.
Yes, this is very much a tease as 4J Studios, Mojang, Microsoft and Sony have not so much as announced a release window yet for Minecraft on either of the two next-gen consoles or the PS Vita. Instead, the closest we’ve gotten so far are 4J Studios stating that there was still much work to be done on the Xbox One Edition coupled with a slightly contradictory statement by new Xbox boss Phil Spencer that it would be coming soon.
However, the developer just released Title Update 14 to add many new features to the Xbox 360 Edition and PS3 Edition of Minecraft followed by Title Update 15 to fix bugs. There’s one more bug update expected to be released and then the PS4 and Xbox One versions should be released sometime after that.
Minecraft: PS4 Edition and Xbox One Edition will both offer new features such as larger worlds and expanded multiplayer features but the PS Vita Edition will share the same feature set as the PS3 Edition and Xbox 360 Edition.
