Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson revealed Friday that his next game, 0x10c, has been "put on ice" while the developer tries to work through a creative block.
"[I]t's just some kind of weird creative block that's been going on for too long, and [0x10c] is going to be put on ice until we can fix that," Persson told Polygon at the Game Developers Conference. "I'm very excited about the actual game. We have two prototypes going on now. It's not really fun yet, but it feels like it could be fun because there's nothing to do in there yet."
0x10c was initially introduced as a spaceship simulation where players can modify their own spaceships as well as program virtual computers in the game. It was also planned to have an economic system, random encounters, space battles and multiplayer and single-player options. That was the plan at least and Mojang already released the virtual CPU specifications to fans so they can begin playing with that part of the game.
Fortunately, the success of Minecraft allows Persson and Mojang the freedom and time to attempt to develop unique ideas for games. The sandbox adventure title recently passed the 10 million mark on the PC alone while the Xbox 360 and mobile editions are also closing in on that mark. The result is a truly independent studio that can afford to make the games it wants to make.
