Country singer Mindy McCready shot her dog to death before shooting herself, Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss said Monday. Last Sunday, McCready, was found dead on the front porch of her Arkansas home with her pet dog lying nearby. The singer died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was 37
A friend of McCready's said there is no way that McCready shot the dog with malice. The friend said that Mindy loved the dog, which had belonged to her late boyfriend. She told reporters that she believes McCready shot the dog because she did not want to kill herself and just leave the pet alone at her property.
Only a month earlier, police had paid another visit to the house in Heber Springs. On that day, they found Wilson dead on the same porch. He, too, had apparently taken his own life.
McCready broke onto the national music scene with her hit 1996 hit song "10,000 Angels".
She had long battled depression and addictions.
In 2011 the singer made national news when she kidnapped her son Zander from her mother who had custody of the boy sparking a nationwide search. She finally returned him to Arkansas. And, she had just recently regained legal custody of Zander.
McCready leaves behind two sons 6-year-old Zander and 10-month-old Zayne.
