Country singer Mindy McCready's boyfriend, David Wilson, 34, committed suicide at his Arkansas home on Sunday evening, per a confirmation from the performer's Nashville PR representative, Kat Atwood.
Wilson, who fathered McCready's second and youngest son, 9-month-old Zayne, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to The Cleburne County Arkansas Sheriff’s Office, who responded to Wilson's home on Jan. 14 after a receiving a report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after 8 p.m.
"Today, we mourn the loss of my life partner and my children's father, David Wilson," McCready, 37, said in a statement on Jan. 15. "David was my soulmate; he was a caregiver and guiding hand to our sons, Zander and Zayne. He was a precious gift from God to all of us and, yesterday, he returned home and is now with his mother and father.
"David loved and he was loved," she added via the statement. "Those who knew and loved him will miss him; those who did not know David missed the opportunity to know a truly loving and gifted man."
As country fans may recall, first found commercial success in the mid-1990s when, at 18, she moved to Nashville with only karaoke tapes to promote her career. The blond artist's debut album, "Ten Thousand Angels," sold two million copies and she's charted at least a dozen songs on Billboard, including the former No. 1, "Guys Do It All the Time"
In more recent years, however, she made headlines for her own 2008 suicide attempt, legal battles with her mother and a tabloid-media company, a high-profile custody battle over her firstborn, son Zander (whose father is singer Billy McKnight), as well as a TV stint on "Celebrity Rehab 3" in 2010.
In a Jan. 15 message posted on McCready's official Facebook, one of her friends, Mike Stokes, asked media and others to respect her privacy. The message is as follows:
"This is a very difficult time for David Wilson's family and friends. As a friend of Mindy's, I ask the media to please back away and give the family time to process what has happened and fans please refrain from any negative hurtful comments or posts. Put yourself in their position and look at it how you would want people to respond to you if you had a similar situation. Mindy needs everyone's love and support through this difficult time. Thank You."
Per Atwood, funeral arrangements for Wilson are pending at this time.
