Country music mourns the loss of Mindy McCready as the troubled singer ended her life Sunday according to People.
The thirty-seven year old reportedly committed suicide at her home in Arkansas according to authorities. Cleburne County sheriff’s department received a report of gunshots mid-afternoon and found McCready’s lifeless body on the front porch of her home.
The sheriff’s department statement states, “Ms. McCready was pronounced dead at the scene from what appears to be a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. At this time family members have been notified of the incident. Ms. McCready will be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy and the matter will be fully investigated.”
It’s no big secret that the country singer has seen her ups and downs. From being arrested for using a fake prescription to purchase Oxycontin to DUI charges, McCready’s struggles possibly gained her more attention than her singing career.
McCready has attempted suicide before. More than a handful of years ago, she was found unconscious in a hotel lobby in Florida after an attempted drug overdose.
Entertainment Weekly reports that she was hospitalized again later that same year for an overdose of antidepressants; this time she was pregnant with her first child. In 2008, she tried again by cutting her wrists.
The singer shared her personal demons with the public on the third season of “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" in 2009 and followed it up with a new album the following year dubbed, 'I’m Still Here.'
Things weren’t always troublesome for the Florida native. Mindy McCready headed to Nashville at the age of 18 and within a short year she landed a recording contract with BNA Records. Her debut album ‘Ten Thousand Angels’ sold over two million copies and her single ‘Guys Do It All the Time’ was a number one hit.
She went on to be nominated as the Top New Female Vocalist at the Academy of Country Music Awards and as Favorite New Artist for the American Music Awards. McCready was well on her way but her personal problems soon threw a wrench in her success story.
So, what led to her final demise? Last week, her two children Zander, 6, and Zayne, 10 months, were placed in foster care and a judge ordered McCready be sent to a treatment facility for mental health and alcohol issues.
How much worse can this story get? Mindy’s boyfriend, David Wilson died just over a month ago from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Hopefully the two young children in this tragedy will be fortunate enough to find some normalcy with a new family and somehow be sheltered from the haunting truth about their parents’ struggles.
As for those who choose to leave this world on their own accord; we do not need to understand but simply accept that to them it was their only chance at peace.
Rest in peace Mindy McCready.
