"If you’re going to look back on something and laugh about it, you might as well laugh about it now,” quipped Marie Osmond.
With doom and gloom predictions like the recent release from Stansberry Research and the news media spouting more negative about the government shutdown, it becomes more and more challenging to maintain a positive attitude.
We inhibit our growth and fail to achieve to our potential when we focus on negatives. You will always receive more of whatever you give your time, attention and focus. If you focus on negatives, you will unconsciously draw more negatives into your life. How attracted are you to doing business with a “negative Nellie” or a “grumpy Gus?”
Think about the successful people you know. What is their normal mood? Very few, if any, highly successful people spend their day complaining, grumbling and moaning about their life. Even if business or their personal life is less than perfect at the moment, they are focused on “How can I make it better?” They focus on “What can I do” rather than whining about current conditions. They focus on establishing and maintaining a positive attitude.
Fill the GAP
Negative news may be surrounding you. You have the right and responsibility to choose how much you allow it to dampen your spirits. You can sulk, drown yourself in alcohol or do a deep dive into a bowl of chocolate; this may be a temporary relief but not a long term solution.
A long term solution requires filling the gap between the current situation and a more ideal solution. Having a positive attitude about the current circumstances and possible solutions places you in a better frame of mind to make decisions.
G – what is currently going on
A – action
P – potential
Filling the gap is determining what is currently going on. What is currently happening? What caused the situation? What can be done to prevent a reoccurrence of the undesirable event? Once you know the details of the current situation and what you can or cannot control about it, you have a place to start in filling the gap.
What action steps are required to move from the current toward the best potential situation?
Carefully design an action plan which is workable. Implement it and periodically check progress to remain solidly on track.
Knowing exactly where you are headed is essential. Determine the best possible result. What is the potential outcome?
Positive Attitude – Positive Action – Potential Goal
When the entire focus is establishing and maintaining a positive attitude, it becomes much easier to make decisions which lead to positive action. A positive attitude coupled with positive action is far more likely to reach a potential goal.
