Apollo Cafe has been a fixture on Milwaukee's East Side for over 10 years.
The decor is spare yet comfortable, the ambiance is casual, and the service is efficient.
Starting a meal with Avgolemono soup is standard in a Greek restaurant, but here, it's best skipped. While the flavor is good, the soup itself seems watered down and was unsatisfying. The Saganaki, on the other hand, is very good - a nice and salty Kefalotiri cheese, perfectly melted - all the better to spread it on a piece of pita bread before gobbling it down.
Moving on to the main courses, the classic Gyro here is done properly, sliced off the double rotisserie behind the counter. The meat is tender and well-seasoned, and the portion is more than generous.
The beef Souvlaki is fine, however, we liked the chicken better - it seemed to have more flavorful spices.
If you like Greek food, or want to try Greek food you've never had before, the perfect solution is the Combination Plate, consisting of Pastitsio, Spanakopita, Dolmathes, and Gyro meat. The Pastitsio is rich and full of ground beef, and the Spanakopita is outstanding and is one of the best things on the menu. Pair it with a more-than-generous appetizer of Feta and Olives, and you have enough for a meal for two.
A cup of Greek coffee finishes the meal to perfection.
