On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10th and 11th a multitude of colorful and strange shapes will float over Milwaukee. They’re not UFO’s, but kites, thousands of them in brilliant colors and shapes of sea horses, fish, geckos, and beautiful butterflies and lots of other swell designs that will fill the lakefront sky over Veterans Park.
This is the thirty-third year for the Don Jacobs Toyota Frank Mots Kite Festival. The event is sponsored by the Kite Society of Wisconsin and Illinois, Gift of Wings and Dan Jacobs Toyota.
Everything kicks off on Saturday at 12 noon with the launch of 600 colorful kites floating gracefully into the air. Kite pilots from around the Midwest and Canada will be on hand to strut their stuff with their kites.
Along with all that’s going on up in the air there will be free kite flying lessons by renowned kite pilots Brett Williams and Jim Cosca and kite flying performances by the Chicago Fire Kite team, the Revolution Kite teams from Seattle and Portland and Team Pegasus from Puerto Rico. Artist and kite maker Ron Gibian from California will demonstrate what goes into making a champion kite. You won’t starve at MOTS you can nosh on Johnsonville brats, Nathan’s hot dogs or a slice of Palermo’s pizza.
Returning for their eleventh year is Capt. Yves LaForest’s Canadian Dream Team from Montreal with their super giant octopus kite that will fly over the park as the icon of the festival.
Also on hand will be kite pilots Josh and Zach Gordon, Roscoe from the Milwaukee Admirals and Bango from the Milwaukee Bucks. Get out and enjoy this colorful free family event full of beautiful kites, fun and food.
