Milwaukee Hiking - January 7 - 8, 2012

Enjoying Milwaukee Winters
Photography by Trisha Comardo

Milwaukee is being blessed by a wonderfully, calm winter January with above average temperatures and below average snowfalls. This, of course, affects those of us who are waiting to try those new snowshoes on. Until then, get out and discover more trails or the winter attire of those you are already familiar with. Enjoy a candlelight hike scheduled in your area along with the full moon this weekend or just a leisurely hike during the sunny, warmer than usual winter days to burn off some of those holiday calories and stress lines.

Saturday January 7, 2012

The Friends of Harrington Beach will lead a candlelight ski/hike at Harrington Beach State Park just 25 miles north of Milwaukee at 531 Cty Rd D in Belgium. The hike will start around 6 pm in front of the Welcome Center, weather permitting. Since there is no substantial snow, this will more than likely become just a hike. The event will run until approximately 9 p.m., weather permitting. For further information call (262) 285-3015

A family snowshoe hike will be held at Havenwoods State Forest located at 6141 N Hopkins Street in Milwaukee. This hiking event will run between 10:30 and 11:30 am. If there is no snow it will be a regular hike. Bring your own snowshoes or hiking boots. Call (414) 527-0232 for further information.

Fantastic Forest of Holiday Trees and and other creatures is a hiking event coordinated by the Wisconsin Go Hiking Club of Milwaukee. This event will take place Saturday, January 7 starting at the Wisconsin Avenue Park located at 10300 West Wisconsin Avenue in Wauwatosa. Contact the club at 414-299-9285 for club information and hiking event information.

For a day of leisurely hiking with the children, the Milwaukee County Zoo has a family free day on Saturday, January 7. Hours are from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Sunday, January 8, 2012 - Event Cancelled

The Nordic Heaven Winterfest originally scheduled to run this weekend in the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Campbellsport has been cancelled due to lack of snow. It is currently rescheduled to March 18, 2012. Contact (920) 533-8322 for further information or watch my articles for updated information when time gets closer.

Soak up some much needed Vitamin D. Unbox those hiking shoes. Be sure they are waterproof as some of the trails are more than likely wet from recently melted snowfalls. Take out the hiking poles and make your way to a trail to enjoy our warmer winter weather while it lasts.
