Thursday night, Sept. 26, The Fifth Annual Milwaukee Film Festival commenced with the opening film, "Break Up Man" (http://www.examiner.com/review/break-up-man-a-milwaukee-film-festival-movie-review?cid=db_articles), and the Opening Night Party. The party started at 8:30 p.m. and continued until 1 a.m. at Discovery World. The evening came with a red carpet, hor d'oeuvres, popcorn, two free drinks, a cinema playing the festival's film trailers, and lots of music.
A large tent was set up just outside Discovery World where guests were frequently brought hor d'oeuvres while they listened to several bands who played on stage before a dance floor. There were also a few bars and couches set up in a heated outdoor area. Members of the Florentine Opera got things started from 8:45-9 p.m., followed by Evan Christian, who played songs such as "Maneater" (Hall & Oates song) on the guitar from 9-9:45 p.m. 88Nine RadioMilwaukee's DJ Madhatter took over from 10-10:45 p.m. and played a mix of dance tunes accompanied by The Video Villains interactive displays, but it wasn't until The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble performed that the dance floor really filled up.
The eight-piece Chicago-based brass ensemble played their unique, eclectic blend of sounds for the enthusiastic film festival crowd from 11-mignight. Milwaukee Film Artistic & Executive Director Jonathan Jackson introduced the group, and the cinephile audience was particularly enthusiastic as the 2013 Milwaukee Film Festival will be featuring a documentary about The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, entitled "Brothers Hypnotic". This documentary ran yesterday, Sept. 27, and will show again at the Oriental Theatre on Monday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. and at the Fox-Bay Cinema on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 5:15 p.m.
The evening ended with 91.7FM WMSE's DJ Bizzon, but the Milwaukee Film Festival is bringing plenty more live bands to Milwaukee through their Soundtrack at the Hotel Foster program. Each night of the festival, now through Oct. 10, live music will entertain moviegoers and the general public (for $5, or free with a ticket stub) at The Hotel Foster.
