At its July 28 meeting, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors voted to urge passage of the Aerotropolis Act of 2011, in support of the Aerotropolis Milwaukee project visioned by the Airport Gateway Business Association (AGBA) that manages the city-approved Airport Gateway Business Improvement District #40 (AGBID) around General Mitchell International Airport (MKE), which was created in 2008.
According to a written statement on AGBA's Gateway to Milwaukee website:
An aerotropolis around MKE will capitalize on the 21st century trend towards greater roles for airports, the aviation industry and related businesses in economic growth.
Mitchell Airport is already a strong resource to develop a business center around, because its advantageous location near I43/94 and the Lake Park Freeway gives easy access to commercial rail and shipping at the Port of Milwaukee, besides the even closer access for travelers to Amtrak trains at the airport station.
The concept puts the Milwaukee airport at the core of an array of clusters of businesses that depend upon aviation and connecting transportation modes, as well as the related cyberstructure, a district that will attract global and national corportations, create jobs at all levels and promote local businesses.
According to Govtrack.us, the Aerotropolis Act of 2011 (H.R. 1371), sponsored by Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), is being discussed by committees, one of the earliest stages of the legistative process,
Earlier this month, the Milwaukee County Board’s Transportation, Public Works & Transit Committee voted to support the bill, allowing the full Board to vote to endorse passage of the Act.
