Doug Melvin, General Manger of the Milwaukee Brewers, has a problem on his hands. He needs to an arm or two to his starting rotation, but with about 80 million dollar payroll, ownership is unwilling to pay out more. On top of that nearly a quarter of the Brewer payroll is tied up in two players, one of whom is no longer on their roster.
The Brewers are on the hook for seven million dollars of Bill Hall’s 2010 contract, since he was traded to the Seattle Mariners last July that is dead money. They are also signed Jeff Suppan’s deal cost them 12.5 million dollars.
We could also add the 4.5 million they owe Pitcher David Riskie, who has been a big disappointment, and we are talking about 25 million dollars of bad contracts. If we were to add the 10.5 million 2010 salary of Prince Fielder to the mix, and the 9.5 million Randy Wolf will make next year we are talking about five players dominating 44 million dollars of payroll.
That leaves the Brewers 36 million to field the rest of their team, and there is no wonder why there is no cash left over to pursue free agents. Teams with smaller payrolls, like the Brewers, cannot allow themselves to get into these kinds of situations.
A MLB organization can field a competitive team with an 80 million dollar payroll, if they are smart about how they structure their deals, and by not getting their payroll out of by giving big deals to a handful of players.
