In just the second race of his rookie season, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia, of Ochlocknee, Ga., won the first 450SX Class Main Event of his career, leading wire-to-wire in the 20-lap Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race at Phoenix’s Chase Field last Saturday night. Rockstar Energy Racing’s Davi Millsaps, of Cairo, Ga., won the opening race of the season at Angel Stadium and as the championship returns there this weekend, Millsaps hopes to defend his points lead. Reigning Western Regional 250SX Class Champion, GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., won his second consecutive Western Regional 250SX Class Main Event in Phoenix and now has a six-point lead in the season point standings.

Barcia, the defending Monster Energy Cup Champion, finished seventh at the season opener and is currently second in the season point standings. A former two-time Eastern Regional 250SX Class Champion, Barcia proved that the often-difficult transition to the 450SX Class is something he was ready to take on.
“I can’t tell you how excited I am right now,” said Barcia, who became the 56th different winner in 450SX Class history. “I didn’t think this win would come so soon. I kept it smooth out there, but the track was super slick. It was a great night for me.”
Two-time defending 450SX Class Champion Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., finished a season-best second place aboard his Monster Energy Kawasaki, and Millsaps rounded out the podium with a third-place finish in Phoenix.
After making a pass on race leader Martin Davalos, who rides for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team, on Lap 7 of the 250SX Main Event, Tomac cruised to his ninth-career win.
“I am totally stoked,” said Tomac. “I am now two-for-two this season, and to get a win here in Phoenix is huge because I have a lot of family and friends here. I haven’t had a lot of great races here in the past, so picking up the win is awesome.”
During the season-opening race at Anaheim two weeks ago, Millsaps used a last lap pass on Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., to win his first 450SX Class Main Event since San Diego in 2010.
“It was a great night for me,” said Millsaps. “This is my first win since 2010, and I was just trying to keep calm out there. It has been a long time since I have led a race, so it was hard to calm my nerves.”
Tomac bounced back from a sixth-place finish in his Heat Race to dominate the 250SX Class Main Event at the season opener in Anaheim.
“I had a tough Heat Race, and that was kind of a wake-up call for me,” said Tomac. “This is how I wanted to start the season. I did a few off-season races, like the Monster Energy Cup, and that kept me in shape.”
The first supercross race held in Anaheim was December 4, 1976, when Marty Smith won on a Honda. The second race at Angel Stadium will mark the 59th time the gates will drop for a race in Anaheim. James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael and Jeremy McGrath are tied on the all-time 450SX Class win list in Anaheim at eight. Ivan Tedesco holds the 250SX Class all-time win record in Anaheim at five. Angel Stadium is the only stop on the tour that will host multiple races this season.
